Velvet Goldmine

The Screening Room's Cinematica Movie of the Month for February 2016 is a fundraiser for CFRC Radio!

Based loosely on the life and times of our dearly departed David Bowie, Velvet Goldmine features Christian Bale as a journalist for a New York paper in 1984, sent to do a story on the disappearance of glam superstar Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) a decade earlier. Imagine Citizen Kane, but about Ziggy Stardust. The film’s elliptical narrative structure wonderfully reimagines the glam and porto-punk era – the characters of Slade and Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor) are none-too-subtly based on David Bowie and Iggy Pop, and the film recasts songs by the Velvet Underground and T-Rex as Slade and Wild compositions, re-recorded for the soundtrack by an all-star band made up of members from Radiohead, Suede, and Roxy Music. A complete bomb on first release, Velvet Goldmine has now found its niche as a cult-classic of rock cinema.
