PumpHouse Museum Pilots Winter Hours

With winter’s end nowhere in sight, the PumpHouse museum will be open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. effective immediately. Now Kingstonians and visitors can experience the museum’s popular pump and train rooms plus the temporary exhibition, “On The Move: 400 Years of Transportation in Kingston.”

“We’re listening to public comments about limited options for indoor activities in the winter months,” said Kevin Gibbs, Manager, Heritage Programming of the City of Kingston Heritage Services.  “After discussions with our programming team and curators, we were intrigued at the possibility to offer museum tours and excited to invite Kingstonians to get out of their house and visit the PumpHouse.”

Perfect for families and history buffs alike, “On The Move: 400 Years of Transportation in Kingston” traces the development of mobility in Kingston with historical objects, interactive displays, and informational panels. Visitors will experience how we move across water and land, the development of public transportation, and how Kingston continues to be connected to areas beyond the city’s borders.

The PumpHouse is in one of Canada’s oldest original water works – where steam-powered pumps provided the first running water to Kingston residents from 1851 to 1952. Only six similar preserved water pumping stations remain in North America.

The PumpHouse is home to a stunning collection of model trains. An elaborate mutli-level O scale train can be set in motion by the push of a button, a diminutive N scale train set showcases impressive miniatures, and the HO scale train set from the opening of the iconic CBC children’s show ‘The Friendly Giant’ is on display.

The PumpHouse is located at 23 Ontario Street, Kingston, Ontario. Admission starts at $3.60 for children, $5.93* for youth and seniors, and $7.21* for adults, (*does not include HST).  Family passes and My Kingston discounts are available.
