Community Harvest, an initiative sponsored by Kingston Community Health Centres, reopens our affordable Farmers Market for the 2021 season! The Market will run every Tuesday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Rideau Heights Community Centre (85 Macauley St.). Opening day will be June 29, 2021. The last Market day will be October 5, 2021, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
Community Harvest reminds community members that health and safety is a priority and it will follow Public Health protocols with physical distancing, mandated mask-wearing, and hand sanitizing by all staff and patrons. No sampling can be provided, and there will not be children’s activities.
New this year, people can meet the Community Harvest gardener, a good resource to answer gardening and recipe questions.
Many local farms and seed savers have donated seeds and seedlings to the Community Harvest's garden. It has more than 25 different veggie crops which will be available to purchase at the Market for nominal fees over the course of the season.
In 2020, due to the pandemic, Community Harvest pivoted away from the Market and instead provided a biweekly local fresh food box to 32 families, with contributions from Sands, Robinson’s Community Gardens, Bill Votary, and No.9 Gardens. No.9 donated over 900lbs of produce to this project last year whose products will be available this year at the Market in addition to other pop up vendors.
Loving Spoonful, a Founding Member of Community Harvest, has rejoined the collective as a community partner. Meet some of the Loving Spoonful staff and volunteers, learn about the new Urban Agriculture Project, and explore opportunities to get involved growing food in your community.
Community Harvest is now located at the new space above and it thanked St. Matthew’s United Church for hosting the Market for five years.
