CFRC is hiring a 2021-22 Community Outreach Coordinator

CFRC 101.9 FM Radio Queen’s University, through the generous support of a Community Radio Fund of Canada Radiometres grant, is hiring a Community Outreach Coordinator!  In this role, the successful candidate will recruit and coordinate a collective of 7-10 campus and community volunteers.  The Community Outreach Coordinator and their team will be dedicated to conducting research on and outreach to local and regional arts groups, service providers and grassroots organizations; interviewing team members for our news programming; creating news briefs and reports about their events, initiatives and developments that impact them; and creating new promotional public service announcements about these organizations to deploy on our airwaves.

CFRC 101.9 FM is Canada's longest-running campus and community radio station, located on the campus of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. CFRC is operated by the board-governed, not-for-profit entity Radio Queen’s University (RQU). Radio Queen’s University recognizes that the station and the campus and municipal communities it serves are situated on traditional Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee territories. RQU recognizes that these territories are part of a longer history that predates European colonization, and are grateful to be able to live, learn and play on these lands.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Recruiting, training, motivating and mentoring volunteers to enhance their skills in live and recorded spoken word programming; 
  • Developing and coordinating a collectives of volunteers involved in the creation and production of local news programming; 
  • Strictly adhering to project timelines, as provided by the Station Director to develop and produce a minimum of two weekly news magazine programs in addition to daily news bulletins and new public service announcements;
  • Facilitating regularly scheduled meetings of the Community Outreach Collective and fostering collaboration among volunteers;
  • Monitoring, responding to, and acting on incoming emails, news feed press releases, event calendar notices; and news tips;
  • Coordinating live-on-location and in-studio broadcasting;
  • Coordinating journalistic research on breaking and ongoing news stories;
  • Providing technical support for live and/or virtual coverage of community events, lectures, talks, meetings etc.;
  • Developing training tools and resources for live broadcast production and spoken word programming in collaboration with other station staff;
  • Developing and presenting a minimum of three skills-building workshops related to news programming production and live remote broadcasting to current CFRC volunteers and interested campus/community members;
  • Liaising with local press, Queen's Communications, the City of Kingston, Queen’s student clubs/organizations, and community groups;
  • Writing and/or editing social media copy promoting programs;
  • Writing and/or editing copy for daily news bulletins for distribution to all CFRC volunteers to deploy in their own programming;
  • Writing and/or editing copy for podcast versions of each program;
  • Increasing CFRC's visibility on campus and in the community by coordinating circulation of CFRC's broadcast schedule and other promotional materials to arts groups and community service providers;
  • Preparing and submitting monthly reports and a final summative report detailing experiences, successes and challenges of the role, including recommendations for the future of such a role; and
  • Attend staff meetings, as requested.

ASSETS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a post-secondary diploma/degree program. 
  • Have at least 1 year of employment and/or volunteer experience in news, communications, public relations and/or media
  • Have at least 1 year of volunteer coordination and training experience
  • Exhibits well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills; able to establish rapport with campus/community partners and groups and to act/follow-up on news leads at a moment’s notice
  • Have demonstrably excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Be a highly motivated self-starter and engaging mentor to Community Outreach Collective volunteers
  • Have demonstrable organizational skills
  • Have demonstrable ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Be team-oriented and flexible with work hours
  • Committed to and comfortable working in and promoting a diverse, socially inclusive environment

The anticipated start date for this position is October 25th, 2021.   Our Community Outreach Coordinator will work 25 hours per week which may include evenings and weekends. The wage rate will be $15-$17 per hour depending on level of experience.
