Call for Applications: 2022 Local Arts Residency at the Kingston Grand Theatre

February 23, 2022

The Local Arts Residency at the Kingston Grand Theatre is back for a second year and is seeking applications from Kingston-based emerging or mid-career professional artists or collectives working in theatre, dance, music, circus, comedy or inter-disciplinary practices. Four week-long residencies will be offered in July 2022 and will provide local performing artists space and support to create, explore and nurture new directions in their work. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 25, 2022, by 5 p.m.

The goal of this program is to support local performing artists and enhance the Kingston Grand Theatre as an artistic community hub,” says Danika Lochhead, manager, arts and sector development. “It was launched last year in response to the impact of the pandemic and through nine residencies, we welcomed over 60 local artists into the venue. The Residency will now continue as an annual program that brings local artists together in a civic performing arts space to nurture creation and collaboration.”

Residency Offerings

This year, the Residency will offer two spaces including the Baby Grand, a dynamic black box theatre, and the Regina Rosen Auditorium, a vibrant performance hall. Two residencies will take place simultaneously over the course of two weeks in July 2022 and the venue will become a hub of local artistic activity.

The 2022 Residencies will take place on the following weeks:

  • Monday, July 4 – Friday, July 8
  • Monday, July 11 – Friday, July 1

Artists-in-residence will receive in-kind use of a professional workspace featuring state-of-the-art equipment, professional support in technical production, and an honourarium of $1,000. All Residencies will include a public presentation component that showcases the work-in-progress in development.

The Residency will be managed in adherence with public health guidelines and safety reopening protocols established for the Grand Theatre.
